Onion project Rwanda

De Groot en Slot (Foundation) works already many years together with Agriterra to transfer knowledge to local onion producers in multiple countries. Agriterra had a special demand, to gain knowledge on storage of onions, from some cooperatives in Rubavu region. Rubavu region is producing the majority of the national onion production in Rwanda. Many small growers rely on Kigali market and export to obtain a reasonable price for their onions. Since production and demand are not always in balance prices are volatile.  

In the course of 2022, we’ve started an onion trial assignment with the main objective of assessing the performance of different onions varieties in terms of both quantity and quality of onions in post-harvest conditions. This with onions from local varieties produced in Rubavu District/Western Province of Rwanda. All the trials have been established at two selected cooperatives in Rubavu (KOKIKA and KOTIBANYA). The onions were harvested in January 2023 and stored at two selected cooperatives. Together with the local representatives and the farmers the results were evaluated.
